The district

Trudaine district - Maubeuge => South Pigalle

Located in the north of the 9th arrondissement near Barbès, Avenue Trudaine benefits from a real revitalization, proudly displaying its small village charm thanks to its remarkable collection of Haussmann-style real estate, after having undergone a successful renovation.

Its name comes from an eminent figure of the 18th century, Daniel Charles Trudaine, intendant of Finances in charge of Bridges and Roads. We owe him the creation of the school of the same name and the creation of an atlas of the roads of France, known as "Atlas de Trudaine".

Crossed by Avenue Trudaine and Rue de Maubeuge, this lively district is also called the Rochechouart district, named after the abbess of Montmartre, Marguerite de Rochechouart de Montpipeau.

Although it initially had a food-related vocation, due to the Rochechouart slaughterhouse built in 1810, this district later became industrial with the installation of the capital's first gasometer located south of Rue Pétrelle. It was in this district that the capital's first workers' city, called Cité Napoléon, was located, built between 1849 and 1851 and now listed as a Historic Monument.

Having become very fashionable during the Belle Époque, the district has several intact examples of late 19th-century architecture. In particular, Square Montholon, the largest green space in the 9th arrondissement designed by Adolphe Alphand. Surrounded by Louis-Philippe style cast iron gates – the work of the founder Christophe-François Calla – they are the only remains of the original square. Also worth seeing are two hundred-year-old oriental plane trees, about 30 m tall, planted on the central lawn.

Including the rue des Martyrs, this district has become “South Pigalle” since 2010 with its new terraces, new galleries, new places for night owls, where an arty, bohemian and festive spirit is developing. From the beginning, the real magic square of the cool party (Lautrec, Mansart, Sans Souci, Chez Moune, plus the Carmen for marathon runners) launched the party, and the food shops were not long in coming (Poularde Saint-Honoré, Papilles gourmandes, Première Pression oils, César, Cul de Poule by Yannig Samot), in the wake of the emblematic and pioneering Rose Bakery and the Hôtel Amour. Not a single poor little massage parlor since then or almost has resisted this invasion of trendy boutiques and brands (Maison Kitsuné, Aesop, Kusmi Tea, Popelini, Glace Glazed) to the great displeasure of the defenders of the “authenticity of the upper 9th” against this hipsterized global culture version SoPi (South Pigalle). Today, we would swear nevertheless that this trendy corner of the 9th is not for nothing in the arrival of a slew of startups ascending to unicorn (Leetchi, Criteo, Blablacar, 1000 mercis, My Little Paris, Fred & Farid and their big sister to all... Google).
